Park Bench Arms Workout

These days I have to get creative to fit in my workouts, so I try to never miss an opportunity to get active. Some days my “workout” is really just a few times during the day when I can squeeze in a few strength moves.

A simple way to do this is at the park while your kids play. As long as you can find a bench, you can get a great workout! These two moves are from the Post Baby workout I created for Fit Pregnancy. Put them together for a killer arm workout you can do with nothing but a bench!

Park Bench Push Ups

Get in plank position with your hands shoulder-width apart on the edge of a park bench and your legs extended behind you. Bend elbows, lowering chest toward bench. Push up to starting position. Do 12 reps.


Right Angle Dip

Sit on the edge of a park bench, hands grasping the seat on either side of your hips. Scoot forward until your butt is just off the edge of the bench, knees bent to 90 degrees and feet flat on the ground; cross left ankle over right thigh Bend elbows directly behind you, lowering butt toward the ground. Extend arms to starting position. Do 10 reps, then switch legs and repeat to complete the set.

Then go back to the push ups and repeat for 3 rounds total. You will definitely feel it in your arms the next day and you can feel proud of squeezing in a workout at the park!

Learning to Slow Down

If there is one thing I’ve learned so far about being a mom of two it’s the value of slowing down. I find it’s the days when I don’t have an agenda and when I’m not in a rush that I enjoy the most.

Like this morning…our plans got cancelled last minute and suddenly I had a morning open to do whatever we wanted. The sunshine was calling me, so we headed to Torrey Pines beach for a walk.


It was really simple, we just strolled along the beach looking at rocks and watching the birds. We didn’t walk far or fast. I just let Sienna lead the pace. It was slow, we stopped a lot and we soaked in the sunshine.

Before having kids, I would have seen the walk as a waste because I didn’t get sweaty or burn lots of calories. I figured if you were going to walk, you mine as well walk fast and make it worth your while. But since then, I have come to appreciate slowing down. Seeing the world through a child’s eyes is fascinating and I realized how many little things I would have walked right by.

Like these rocks. We sat and looked at rocks for a solid 5 minutes! Every one was unique and beautiful.

Sienna and I picked them up one by one and studied them. Then she would proceed to show the rock to Capri and to her stuffed dog.

Journey to Post Baby Best (Round 2) – 4 month update

Hey Everyone! Hope your new year is off to a great start. Can you believe January is almost over? I wanted to pop in to share with you how my journey to post baby best is going this time around. (If you missed my 6 week update you can read it here.)

Capri will be 4 months old a week from today and she’s just the sweetest! We love her little easy going personality. She just smiles and laughs at whoever will look at her. And big sister Sienna is doing just awesome! She is Capri’s favorite entertainment and I love seeing their bond as sisters begin to form.


I am continuing to make progress towards finding my post baby best, here’s where I am at.

Pre-pregnancy: 125 pounds
End of pregnancy: 150 pounds
6 weeks: 131.5 pounds
16 weeks: 123 pounds

Pilates – I love how pilates helps you rebuild your core strength. There is a studio called Core 40 near my house that offers 40 minutes classes on the pilates reformer machine and they are killer! I haven’t been able to go as often as I’d like, but I love it when I can.

Eating

I think the majority of my results over the past few months has been due to eating well.

Nursing Friendly Recipes

When I got pregnant the first time around, I figured that the food restrictions during pregnancy would be the most limiting and that after having the baby, I’d be able to eat wherever I like again. This has definitely not been the case for me.

Both of my girls have had digestive trouble. Sienna had acid reflux and Capri has had some colic/gas issues. With Sienna, cutting out dairy helped with her reflux and made her a significantly more happy baby. So I cut out dairy for the whole year I nursed her.
As soon as I noticed that Capri had similar fussiness and gas, I immediately cut out diary, but dairy alone didn’t seem to solve the issue. After talking with my lactation consultant, I decided to cut out gluten as well, since it’s a common offender for nursing babies.

Let me tell you, it’s been quite an adjustment cutting out both gluten and dairy from my diet. The dairy wasn’t too bad to eliminate, especially since I had done it before, but the gluten was tough.

Confession: I really like bread. The first two days after cutting out gluten, my body had withdrawals. I had headaches and felt irritable and tired. I imagine it is what it feels like to give up caffeine. I was amazed to see how much my body was addicted to gluten.

After the first couple days, I felt better, although I did feel hungrier overall.

My new favorite Workout Tanks

If you came to my house and looked in my closet you’d probably laugh because I have about 3 times as many workout clothes as regular clothes. I just love active wear and it’s so practical for my life as a mom.

In fact, my workout outfits are often more stylish and put together than my regular outfits. There’s just something about putting on a workout outfit I love that makes my workout feel better!

I’m always on the look for new brands that I love. Some of my favorites are Athleta (of course) and Beyond Yoga. And my new favorite brand for workout tanks is Ray of Light Designs. If you follow me on Instagram you’ve gotten a sneak peak of me (and my mom and sister) sporting some of their designs.


Ray of Light Designs was started by my mom’s best friend, Kim. She and her son, a high school senior, have worked together to develop the brand and designs. Isn’t that awesome mother/son bonding?! They wanted to create faith inspired active wear that was stylish and comfortable and I think they hit the nail on the head!

I’m big on having physical reminders around of what’s important to me. My home is covered with inspirational prints and photos of the people I love.

Diastasis Recti – What you need to know

I’ve gotten a lot of questions lately from friends who have had babies and are dealing with a separation in their abs, which is officially called Diastasis Recti.

It’s a fairly common problem, but it can be super frustrating because it can slow your progress of getting back into shape postpartum and getting a flat stomach.

Today I am going to give you some basic info about how to determine if you have diastatis recti and how to remedy it. To do so, I’ve created two quick videos for you:

Journey to Post Baby Best (Round 2) -Birth & 6 week update

Hi Ladies,

Hope you are all doing well and enjoying the fall. We have been settling into life as a family of 4, with all the craziness and fun that comes along with it.


Birth and first few weeks
Some of you have asked about Capri’s arrival and I wanted to share about it here briefly. As I mentioned in my Motherhood without Judgement post, we had a scheduled c-section to bring Capri into the world. It was the safer route for both of us and it certainly was nice to be able to plan for her arrival and know which day she would be here.
The whole experience was so different than with Sienna. As we got checked into the hospital and they prepped me for surgery, I just couldn’t believe we would be meeting our sweet girl in a matter of minutes! I was actually having some mild contractions that morning, which gave me confidence that we had scheduled it at the right time.

The c-section was so smooth! It was strange because for us, the moment was so exciting and monumental, but for everyone else in the operating room, it was just another day at work. The doctors were discussing their vacation plans as they cut me open and pulled out Capri. It was strangely comforting to know they were so comfortable with what they were doing. It was also so nice to be fully present to experience the birth (as opposed to last time when I had been in labor for 30 hours).

Korean Beef Recipe

Hey Everyone!

It’s my first official post since having sweet Capri on September 25th. We are slowly adjusting to life with two girls and though it’s tough at times, overall, I feel so blessed!


My amazing friends have been stepping up to bring us meals to lighten my load with the cooking. One of my favorite parts of getting meals is learning about new recipes! Thanks to my friend Kyle for this amazing one that I am going to be adding to our regular rotation!

Korean Beef

2 pounds ground beef
8 cloves garlic minced
2 t freshly grated ginger
1/4 cup dehydrated whole cane sugar
1/2 cup Braggs Amino Acid (or soy sauce)
Red pepper flakes to desired spiceness
Green onions, minced for garlic

Brown the ground beef in a skillet. Remove any excess fat.
Once browned add in the garlic and ginger. Let it sauté with the beef for about three minutes.
Stir in the sugar, soy since, and optional red pepper flakes. Gently summer for ten minutes.
Serve atop a bed of delicious basmati or jasmine rice. Garnish with minced scallions or chives.

Fit Jeans Challenge

Hey Everyone,

Hope your week is going well. Thank you all so much support about the changes for Tailored Fitness. So many of you have shared encouragement for me in this next season and how Tailored Fitness has impacted you over the past few years. As promised, I don’t plan to disappear on you, so I wanted to pop in with an idea for staying active this fall.

It’s been so fun browsing social media and seeing all the First Day of School photos over the past couple weeks. Although the weather here doesn’t feel like fall yet, the back to school vibe is in full swing. Fall is kind of like a 2nd New Year’s and a perfect time to get back to the goals and priorities that are important to you.

If exercise is one of them, I wanted to remind you that last year’s Fit Jeans Challenge is still available for you on our YouTube Channel. As a reminder, it’s a 28 day program of short workouts (less than 20 minutes) that are designed to help you feel great in your jeans this fall.


Here’s the schedule of workouts and nutrition challenges if you want to follow the program:
Before you start, try on a pair of jeans that is too small. Snap a picture and note how you feel. Then try them on again at the end of the challenge.

The Future of Tailored Fitness

It has been such an amazing journey over the past 3 years starting, growing, and running Tailored Fitness. Getting to know all of you through the course of this process has been an absolute joy.

As we prepare to welcome our 2nd baby in a little over a month, I have been doing some serious reflection and searching as I figure out what life as a work-at-home mom of 2 is going to be like. If I have learned anything about motherhood so far, it’s to be flexible because things are constantly changing. As I prepare for the change of welcoming another child, it’s time for a change for Tailored Fitness as well.


During this next season of life, I feel called into a season of simplicity and focus on my family. As they always say, the days are long, but the years are short and I want to be able to be fully present and be able to look back at this season with no regrets. To free myself up to step into this new season, we will be shutting down the Tailored Fitness membership program.
I tried so many ways to figure out how to continue the membership program. After all, I am a people pleaser at heart and hated the thought of letting any of you down. But I have also learned that I must choose what is best for me and my family, even if it may upset others, to find true joy.

I know there will be lots of questions about what this transition means, so here are a few answers to start.

App.MyTailoredFitness.com – I am SO EXCITED that we are going to be able to keep a simple version of the app live with a limited subset of workouts available for everyone so you can still get your Tailored Fitness workout fix. So even though the monthly challenges and accountability for members will be ending, you’ll still have access to the workouts you love. It’s still my mission to help women live a healthy life, so even if I can’t provide new workouts right now, it’s important for me to be able to give you the resources you need to stay active.

Member Accounts – You received an email from me on Thursday with the details about how we will close out your accounts and provide prorated refunds for annual members. If you have questions or concerns, email me.

The Blog – I will keep the blog live as a resource for you all to access. I may post occasionally once I settle into life with 2 kids to continue to bring you encouragement as you continue your health journey. If you are subscribed to our newsletter, you’ll get an email when I post so you won’t miss out.
Other Social Media Sites – I will also keep up our Facebook Page, Pinterest, Twitter, YouTube Channel, and Instagram accounts, so we can keep in touch! If you want to hear news about our new baby and what I am up to personally, Instagram is the best place to follow me.
What now? – You will still be able to access the app and many of the Tailored Fitness workouts, but if you are looking for a workout program with a monthly calendar, here’s a good option. You can check out The Balanced Life Online with Robin Long. She has Pilates and barre workouts and her approach to fitness is similar to what we embrace at Tailored Fitness. She has a membership program where she provides a workout calendar and monthly encouragement to stay on track. Robin and I have chatted several times and I know you’ll be in good hands with her program.
